One of the most common questions we get from our customers is what they can do to help their grass revive sooner and stronger when spring arrives. The truth is that for greener grass in the spring, you need to start now in the fall with fertilization. The right fertilizer put on your grass in the fall can feed the roots over the long winter season and help the grass come back stronger in the winter.

EGYPT CREEK LANDSCAPING OFFERS FERTILIZATION SERVICES

In the fall, our team recommends applying a high-potassium fertilizer. This is best to help feed the roots and create greener grass when the weather warms up. We also recommend aerating your lawn in the fall before a fertilizer application so it can penetrate deep into your lawn. We also like to apply a weed control compound so you don’t have to battle weeds in your yard when spring arrives. Of course, during other seasons, there are other fertilization methods and formulas we prefer. Our lawn care team in Grand Rapids can find the right routine and formulas for your grass!

Like it or not, the end of summer has arrived and we’re quickly heading into fall. For some people, fall means cozy sweaters, hot chocolate, and lots of pumpkin carving. For others, it’s the gloomy end of long, warm summer days spent outside. No matter how you feel about fall, your lawn will need a little attention to help it prepare for the cooler temperatures. Some basic autumn lawn care can help your Grand Rapids grass come back looking better than ever in the spring.

HOW TO PREP YOUR LAWN FOR FALL & WINTER

DO A GENERAL CLEANUP OF YOUR YARD.

Summer can take its toll on your lawn, so take a moment to do a little cleanup work. Pick up summer toys that won’t be needed in the winter, cover up lawn furniture, and pick up any branches and early fall leaves that have fallen. You can mow your grass a little shorter now, too.

AERATE AND FERTILIZE FOR EVEN BETTER RESULTS.

Fall is a great time to aerate and fertilize your lawn. Aeration will allow the fertilizer to penetrate deeper into the roots of the...

Egypt Creek Landscaping is busy helping our clients prepare their trees for the coming fall and winter seasons! Late summer is the perfect time to have our tree service out to your property. With a little help from us, your trees can come back more beautiful and stronger than ever this spring.

WHY TRIM YOUR TREES IN THE LATE SUMMER?

Once it starts to get cooler at night and the sun starts to set earlier in the day, it marks the end of the growing season for trees. That’s when they start to lose their leaves and become dormant for the winter. The beginning stages of dormancy are the perfect time to trim your trees, but you want to do it before it becomes too cool. During the fall, there is a higher concentration of fungi and diseases that can attack your tree through open wounds left by the trimming process. If you can’t trim in the late summer, let our team do it for you in the winter.

TRIMMING NOW MEANS HEALTHIER TREES IN THE SPRING

Trimming your trees now allows the tree to focus its energy on new growth in the spring....

When someone mentions a yard or lawn, what do you imagine? It is likely that you imagine a relatively flat space covered in lush, healthy grass or a well-landscaped yard with trees, flowers, and various other plant life. Does your imagined yard include mulch? Have you ever considered mulching your garden or using mulch as a lawn alternative? Mulching offers many benefits to your lawn, three of which we discussed in our previous blog post. Keep reading for three more benefits of mulching.

3 MORE BENEFITS OF MULCHING

SOIL

Mulching helps to protect your soil in two ways. For one, it creates a protective layer for your soil from the forces of rainwater. Instead of the rain being allowed to fall directly on the soil, which causes erosion, the water must first find its way through the mulch before it contacts the soil. The second way mulching protects your soil is through organic mulch, which provides your soil with nutrients.

INSULATION

Mulch also plays a part in insulating your soil, which simply means...

When many homeowners imagine a lawn, they image a lush yard of healthy, green grass, but this is not the only yard option. In fact, some lawn alternatives can greatly reduce your maintenance costs as well as provide your lawn with many other benefits. Keep reading to discover the first three advantages of mulching your lawn or garden in our short mulching blog series. Stay tuned for our next blog post to find out three more benefits of mulching.

3 BENEFITS OF MULCHING

MOISTURE

Mulching in garden beds helps the soil retain its moisture content for a longer period of time, providing any plant life within the soil with ample moisture to grow and develop a strong root system. Mulching helps to retain moisture within the soil for two reasons: (1) if the mulch is organic, it will absorb the moisture and (2) mulch shields the soil below from the sun, slowing the evaporation of the water in the soil.

WEEDS

How do less weeds in your lawn sound? Mulch also serves as a twofold method for controlling weed growth...

Simply giving your lawn water is not enough to keep it green and healthy all summer long. In fact, improper watering techniques could mean you’re doing your grass more harm than good by over or under watering. Review the following tips to ensure you’ll keep an attractive lawn this summer by following correct watering practices.

WATER IN THE MORNING

One of the most common watering mistakes homeowners make is watering their lawns at the wrong time of day. When you water your lawn in the morning, the water has the chance to soak into the root system and dry off of the grass blades before evening, when the pests come out.

In contrast, homeowners who water in the afternoon are not exposing their lawns’ roots to enough moisture because it evaporates away too quickly. Watering in the evening can be equally detrimental to the health of your yard because the damp grass will attract all of the disease-carrying pests that come out after dark. Water in the morning before the hot summer temperatures kick in for a healthy lawn this summer.

If you’re selling your Grand Rapids home, you’ve probably spent a lot of time and effort on the interior in order to turn it into a space anyone would want to live in, but what about the outside? Many sellers get so caught up in the design and cleanliness of the inside of the home (which is important, too, of course) that they neglect the exterior. When buyers are viewing your home, the exterior is what provides the first impression. Ensure a good first impression with home buyers in your area by maximizing your home’s curb appeal.

HOW DOES CURB APPEAL AFFECT HOME SELLING?

An unkempt exterior home appearance can interfere with your selling endeavors, but creating quality curb appeal can help you sell your home quicker and for more money. That being said, how exactly can curb appeal help you sell your home?

ONLINE HOME SEARCHES

In today’s modern age, home buyers don’t even have to change out of their pajamas before doing a little bit of house shopping. Listings are easily accessible online, with buyers taking more virtual...

All you want is to maintain a healthy, green lawn throughout the warm seasons, but there is a host of destructive problems that your yard could encounter. One of these is a grub worm infestation, which can have severe adverse effects on the health of your lawn if not quickly identified and dealt with. If you’ve never contended with grubs before, keep reading to learn what you need to know to be prepared for these damaging pests.

WHAT IS A GRUB WORM?

Grub worms, also simply called grubs, are the larvae of certain species of beetles, which lay their eggs in healthy lawns and gardens during the summer season. The specific species of beetle depends greatly on where you live, and although not all adult beetles are hazardous to your lawn, all grub worms are typically considered to be pests in need of good riddance.

WHAT DO GRUB WORMS DO?

Once the beetle eggs hatch, the larvae (grubs) burrow into the soil and use your lawn’s root system as a food source. As you can imagine, a sizable infestation can quickly ruin your lawn. By...

Professional landscaping may be the solution to your outdoor woes whether you’re facing a flat, dirt lot or an overgrown mess. Sure, you could give some DIY landscaping projects a shot, but first review the following.

KNOWLEDGE BASE & EXPERIENCE

Experienced professional landscapers will simply know a lot more than you likely do about the various aspects of landscape design. Whereas the average homeowner might make selections based entirely on aesthetic appeal, a professional will be able to tell you what type of plant life is going to grow the best on your property, which plants and materials reside together effectively and which do not, and the tools, equipment, and techniques required to complete your landscaping project. An experienced landscaping company will be able to incorporate your tastes and expectations into your new landscape while also providing the ideal landscape design for your...
